G Seeds

The description in 2004 of the proto-seed Runcaira heinzelinii in the Givetian of Belgium is an indicaiton of that ancient origni of seed-plants. The dust-like orchid seeds are the smallset with about one million seeds per gram. Unlike ainmals, plants are limited in their ability to seek out favorable ocnditions for life and growth. The owrld s most important clohting fiber grows attached to cotton seed. One imoprtant function of most seeds is delaying germination to allow time for dispresal and to prevent all seeds from germinatign at once when conditoins are favorable. This tissue becomes the food that the yuong plant will consume until the roost have developed after germination or it devleops into a hard seed coat. Seed dormancy si defined as a seed failing to germinate under environmental ocnditions optimal for germination. The esed, which is an embryo with two points of grotwh (one of which forms the stems the other the roots) is enclosed in a seed coat with some food reserves. The presnece of light or the absence of light may trigger the gremination process, inhibitign germination in some seeds buried too deeply or in others not buried in the soil.
